@ Matthijs (MeAndMyCam), First thing first:
I once gave some1 here a tip about how to improve a photo. S/he did what I suggested (in about 5 minutes), never said a word, and possibly for everyone else who had not seen the original, my comment appeared petty. I would never take yours or anyone else's advice without a following announcement and a big thank you.
Your crit does not seem odd, it is still most correct. The sharpness in this picture is good, I think, but it is soft!
I would have followed your suggestion. I believe the eye can be sharpened, but the way I processed this picture was not clever, and now I'll need to start a 3 hour work all over, so I'll leave it as it is.
This soft sharpness is normally what one gets, using a flash to compensate for the low shutter speed when exposure time goes below 1/100.
The time of day was late, and the 50 pictures I took between 17:00-19:00 were bad attempts. This is when these little guys are most active unfortunately, and by 19:03 I needed to use the flash. It makes things even worse because my flash causes a delay of about a second, about half the time hummingbirds spend in one spot. This was an 'against all odds' shot.
And I am not fully happy with it. I keep trying for months now to get a better picture.
@ Patrick (moserArtist): thank you so much for your suggestions and help in private channels.
Thanks to everyone else for your comments and critiques of this work and others. I learn from each.
